Monday Roundup

Mt. Rainier over Myrtle Creek, Washington

Good morning, bookworms! I hope you are all enjoying your summer and curled up with a good book along the banks of a stream, at the beach or in the mountains somewhere, far away from your computers! But for those who aren't, just pretend this scene is right outside your window. (No, I'm not there, either. I took the photo last summer.)

It's Monday morning and that means it's time to check in and find out what you're reading or reviewing. Please leave a comment if you'd like me to add a link to your review on our sidebar or if you've found the next good book you want to tell everyone about! If you're new to the site and want to be listed as a bookworm, please leave a comment as well. I'll check the comments and add everyone in by the end of the week.

On berrybird's recommendation, I just finished reading "Lost Mountain." I'll write my own review later, but for now I'll just say that the book is everything berrybird said it was, and I highly recommend it.

What are you reading?

Wow. I'm looking forward to reading Lost Mountain. I just finished Deep Economy - review up next week - and started See You in a Hundred Years about a family that gives up NYC for rural, farm life without electricity, cars, etc (as if they were living in 1900). So far it seems like a light read, which I need right now.

I'm a slacker -- I've been reading the last (most recent) two books in the Dune cycle and, for Sharon's book club, Life as We Knew It. Next on my list, Bernard Cornwall's Saxon series. Oh well, it's summer, the reading is easy, and I'm still rewarding myself for finishing Collapse.

Hi, I just posted three mini-reviews of light eco-reading for summer. Thanks for all of the resources -

I finally stopped pretending I had the time or brain power for anything in-depth or highly intellectual this month. :) I went with "True Green" which was an extremely quick read. Review is here: http://kelliebrown.blogspot.com/2008/07/book-review-true-green.html

The Lost Mountain is a great book!

I'm reading Prague by Arthur Phillips. Okay, it's a novel. About Budapest, funnily enough. It has nothing to do with the environment but I need a mental break before grad school!

I have been totally unable to get either Stuffed and Starved or Commonwealth from my library, so once my freegan month is over, I'm buying them used off of Amazon.

Also, I just remembered I have two books that are horribly overdue. Uh oh.

You guys all read my mind! After some heavier books, I'm more than ready for a light read!

GB: I'll look forward to your review since I had mixed feelings about the book. I've been wanting to read "See You," but our library doesn't have it. :( Guess I'm going to have to learn how to use the inter-library loan one of these days. This book sounds like it would fit the bill for my "light read" perfectly!

susanb: I'm not familiar with any of those, but they sound like the perfect reads for summer. Enjoy those rewards!

Megan: Thanks for the links to your reviews -- I'm adding them to the sidebar and also adding you as a bookworm since I don't think you were on the list. Sounds like 3 more books for me to consider!

kellie: I hear you! My brain's tired, too! Thanks for the great review -- I'm adding it in.

bobbi: It's really good, isn't it! Discouraging, but really good.

arduous: Sounds like we're all on the same page for light reading! I haven't read any of those, although "Stuffed" is on my current list. Hey, you better get those others returned -- you never know if the librarians might chase you all the way to England!

Erika at Extra Ordinary is holding an online book club discussion for In Defense of Food here. She does these book clubs from time to time - if anyone is interested in a reading a book together with some other bloggers.

Whew - I was able to finish up my 2nd book just in time. Another pretty easy read, but an *excellent* book. Dierdre Imus' "Green This! Greening Your Cleaning"

I have Lost Mountain sitting on the table but I've yet to crack it and it will be due soon. Thank goodness for renewals. Instead I'm reading short stories and old magazine vignettes from MFK Fisher. They're lovely.

I am reading The Back Road to Crazy: Stories from the Field edited by Jennifer Bove. Not a green book in the sense of living sustainably, but a wonderful collection of creative non-fiction told by professional biologists, many of whom whose their careers out of a love for nature. Really good stuff.

GB: Thanks for the link -- I added it to the book reviews list since it makes a great review.

kellie: Enjoyed your review! My house is in desparate need of cleaning so I wish I had a copy of the book sitting here right now. I don't suppose she gives tips on how to properly clean when you have a preschooler underfoot at all times?

kale: Enjoy those short stories -- that sounds lovely. :) "Lost Mountain" was a pretty quick read and I think you'll be glad you chose it, although I wouldn't call it light reading because of the subject.

berrybird: I added your title to our list. Fun! It looks like some great summer vacation reading.

I read Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv, and would dearly like a link in the sidebar.
