Monday Roundup

Happy Monday, everyone. I've spent the past couple weeks camping in Montana and then returned home to a whirl of activity while we get our house ready to sell. Whew! What a change of pace!

While at Glacier National Park, I started reading Farm City. I was really enjoying it and was going to renew it from the library when I got home, but it turns out that someone else requested it. It wasn't going to get read any time soon with major projects and contractors buzzing around like bees, so I returned it. I guess I'll have to find out what happens when she gets the rabbits when my turn comes up again.

So anyway, no review this week. I'm swamped. And I'm supposed to be on vacation! How about you? If you've read a good book or written a review, please drop in a comment!

Oh, I LOVE Glacier National Park! Been there several times. Talk about a great place to read books about making our world a better place!

Two practical books this week -- Peterson's Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants (I didn't really read this, as much as peruse this) and Well-Preserved by Eugenia Bone. The first of these books is just what it purports to be. Bone's book has gotten a lot of PR from various newspapers like the NYT. It's a small collection of small batch preserving recipes (canning, freezing, smoking, oil and salt) with three or four recipes for using each preserved item, and an overview of various preserving techniques. Lots of pretty pictures of food and a nice format. I like it because it looks at preserving from a slightly different angle than the traditional preserving handbooks, and we are a small household so the small batch, as in you overbuy at the farmer's market, is useful. Some of the recipes are too chi-chi for us but so it goes. She explains basically the reasoning behind different preserving methods, uses up to date food safety, and talks a little bit about how you to can modify preserving recipes. If you too overbuy at the farmer's market, you should take a look at this book. Maybe check it out from the library before buying it because it's not for everyone. All shades of green.

Gorgeous photo!! Love Glacier.

Also, lol, because the same thing happened to me with Farm City. Darn those reservation systems. Now working on The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green by Terra Wellington and waiting til I can reserve Farm City again. :) Have a great rest of your week.

Heather, yes, it was beautiful! Didn't have half as much time for reading as I planned, though. I was too busy hiking!

SusanB: Thanks for the report on the books. I might have to check out Well-Preserved as small batches is just my style. Sounds good!

GB: Thanks! So how far did you get in Farm City?

The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green sounds like a title you could have written yourself! I hope you write a review on it when you're done.!

Susan B - Since I read your comment about Well-Preserved I've seen it mentioned in a couple other places and actually made her recipe from the NYT for brandied peaches. I didn't have brandy but used a bit of old rum. I've never eaten brandied peaches in my life but it was very easy and so good I couldn't believe I made it. Thank you for mentioning it here because I may not have given her recipe a second look and I'm so glad I did.

OK, a little late than never, but here's the review of "Mom, will this chicken give me man boobs?" that I mentioned last week: http://going-green-mama.blogspot.com/2009/08/mom-will-this-chicken-give-me-man-boobs.html

Wish I had the excuse of being at a national park! But no. :)
