I enjoyed a couple wonderful books this past month to share with you this week. But what about you? Any good books to share?

Summer has drawn to a close and a beautiful fall awaits. For some of us that means admiring the fall colors and for others, we're just happy to lose those 100 degree temps (or the constant threat of heat stroke). Either way, it's a new season with new fresh local foods and some exciting new reads - don't forget No Impact Man's book just came out...

I wasn't feeling well last week and so ended up doing a lot of reading. I read Mark Bittman's Food Matters, which I plan to do a review for JAM or someone else to post; "Alex and Me", the story of the "very smart" grey parrot who died last year and his researcher, and got Amy Goldman's "Heritage Tomatoes" from the library. "Alex and Me" isn't directly on point but will get you thinking about animal/human relationships and is also an interesting portrayal of women in science and science in academia from the '70's forward, a quick read but if you're like me, be prepared to weep through the first thirty pages and the last chapter. Re "Heritage Tomatoes" -- better than seed catalogs and recipes too. And not only does she have another book on squash, she has one on melons.
I read Doug Fine's Farewell My subaru- Okay I checked the CD out from the library. Really good story- love reading about his challenges on trying to live a carbon nuetral lifestyle, raising goats and generally making a mess of things- the one thing I get out of this book- the journey of a thousand miles is started by small steps. If you don't try you won't succeed! Review is here
Susan - Wow! You have been busy! I'll look forward to your reviews!
Rob - Thanks for the review. This is one I have on my book list. I'll definitely be checking it out now. I need a good laugh :)
Oh wow, I didn't know that Alex had died. I used to work with a couple that had an African grey and also pet-sat for them. Smart, smart bird. Probably drives them nuts saying things in my voice. hehe
Rob, I'll get your review posted soon. Thanks!
